Smart Tips for Summer Fitness

By Dana Gore

Summer is just around the corner and since this usually marks the beginning of bathing suit season, I´m pretty certain that "diet and exercise" may be on your minds.

If you´re looking to keep in line with a realistic, safe and healthy fitness regimen...read on!

Tip 1 - Stay Hydrated The general rule of thumb is that if you get thirsty, you are already dehydrated. Since most of us begin our day with coffee, which is a diuretic, begin your day with an 8 oz. glass of water first thing upon waking up and several more throughout the day while keeping caffeine and sodium to a minimum.

Tip 2 - Stay Cool Even though we live in sunny South Florida, exercising in heat is far different than simply living and surviving in it. If you aren´t used to working-out in hot weather, consider slowly acclimating yourself to this type of climate before diving into a full outdoor fitness regimen. Small amounts of exercise in 90 degree weather until you´re confident your body can handle it will keep you free from heat related discomfort and dangers. Remember to wear loose and comfortable clothing to allow the heat to escape your body and you should be good to go!

Tip 3 - Stay Stable I´m referring to your blood sugar! Keep your mind and body awake and alert by fueling it often with foods that are easy on the digestive system. Your body is already working to stay cool, so give yourself a break and keep your energy sources supplied with vegetables, fruits, whole grains and lean proteins. 5-6 small meals a day is optimal.

By focusing on making safe and permanent lifestyle changes, we avoid the stress of rushing into a goal. By keeping yourself in safe and properly progressed forms of fitness, the likelihood of being ready for bikinis all year round is much higher!
