New Panasonic Battery Plant, Kansas City

By Teresa Aquila
Kansas City is about to grow. The 4.7 million-square-foot battery plant is under construction on the site of the former Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant, and hopes to begin production in March 2025. Panasonic was once sole producer of batteries for Tesla, but that venture has taken a turn, and Panasonic is going it alone with this new plant.

Panasonic will spend 110 million dollars and bring 180 jobs to the city. Other companies that supply products for the EV maker will also be heading to Kansas City. As the song says, “Kansas City, here I come.” But is Kansas City ready for the growth? Like northern Nevada, the growth has Reno Tahoe Industrial Park, east of Reno, NV, the traffic has become a nightmare at times, due to the heavy growth of industry. The infrastructure was not in place from the beginning, which has caused quite the traffic jam. And to think, a brothel owner had a vision of the largest industrial park in the United States, or the world.

So what is Kansas City in for? A company as big as Panasonic can only bring change. Is Kansas City ready for the transformation? Growth is great, but manageable growth is the key, not build first, and the employees will come. Like Reno, Nevada, where will everyone live? The cost of living and lack of housing has skyrocketed to where you must have a five-figure-income to purchase a medium-sized home.

Currently, the average cost for a medium-sized home in Kansas City is $246,215. Similar to the Reno market prior to Reno Tahoe Industrial Park. Time will tell if Kansas City will follow the same fate as Nevada. Happy Motoring.
