New Year, New Goals

By David Hall
It’s that time!

Time to put away the seasonal decorations, basking in the glow of the holiday spirit. Follow up with family members, friends and associates in wishing for a hope-filled year of love, light, community.

As we embark on the 2024, so many things become clear.

CLEARING CLUTTER

Clearing Clutter is a paramount priority starting the new year.

When we clear the clutter, we allow

SPACE for new things to emerge.

New things include “stuff,” ideas, heart opening, and so much more.

When we Clear the Clutter… we Clear the Mind. Truly an amazing thing that happens.

Alternatively, when we sit in our surroundings filled with distracting piles.

Piles of laundry, papers, magazines, books, old CDs, VHS tapes and so much more, we get distracted, and therefore less focused on our intentions, more focused

On clearing the clutter, “someday”, “eventually”, “soon.”

That clutter you try to ignore only sticks around to be annoying, a nuisance and a distraction.

TAKE THIS TEST

Find a cluttered surface in your home.

It can be a kitchen counter, a bedroom nightstand, a bathroom sink area, the laundry room folding surface.

The first way to clear the clutter is to simply REMOVE EVERYTHING ON THE COUNTER you’ve selected. Remove everything, place it on the side. CLEAN the surface so it’s shiny clean.

Now, look at that surface. It should look pretty good, as there’s nothing to distract the eye. Nothing there to think about, except, maybe, future dusting.

Next step. DELIBERATELY and with CLARITY place items you need to SEE on the surface. Less is more!! The drawers, cabinets and shelves surrounding the counter are there as storage areas so that the surface can remain free of clutter, free of TMS (too much stuff).

Try this. Try this one time… notice how you feel when the counter is free of stuff.

When you are deliberate with what stays on the counter, you realize what’s important.

And what is secondary. You’ll soon, if not immediately, experience control, calm and space.

Once one counter has been cleared, polished and repurposed with minimum items, take a breath. Acknowledge that you are taking charge. Then, take on another counter.

THIS MONTH, LET COUNTER CLEARING BE YOUR GOAL

For some readers, this will be a challenge, for others not so much. But even a minimalist can experience new found space and freedom by simply clearing the counters (again) and finding other places to put stuff.

For others, this may be a no brainer… and you may want to dig deeper. Let’s encourage you to do that. I suggest working on the cabinets around the countertop. Bathroom cabinets Beneath the sink are often problem spots with TMS (too much stuff). Again, take EVERYTHING out of the cabinet. Clear it out. Wash it down.

Discard empty or mostly empty bottles of moisturizers, old meds, things that dried out and so forth. Most of us will realize we have more space now that we’ve purged things that no longer serve. Many under the sink spaces can use “risers” – those simple little shelves that afford us two levels in one space. Go on and treat yourself to a riser or two AFTER you’ve cleared the clutter.

So, for the new year, A Clutter Clearing Services challenges you to start taking charge of your home spaces. Counter by counter, shelf by shelf, cabinet by cabinet.
