Until recently, the only place to purchase a quality beef hot dog was a Kosher deli. All that has changed, however, with the arrival of Delray Beach’s Killer Dogs owned and operated by Kathryn Cohen and Glenn Nathan. This talented duo has not only reformulated the fresh all beef frank, but has transformed it into a gourmet masterpiece.
The restaurant’s contemporary interior features an open kitchen and a counter where orders are placed (cash only). A large menu posted on the rear wall lists all the current offerings which include a variety of mains and sides. The spacious dining area has a number of stylish high tops followed by rows of sparkling tables.
Our first order, the jumbo, signature quarter pound Killer Dog was so large, that I had to cut off one end in order to take the first bite. The flavor, texture and aroma of the never frozen all beef frank were spectacular. The custom made sauerkraut, piled high, was crunchy, not soggy, almost devoid of saltiness and absolutely scrumptious. The superbly crafted roll was barely large enough to hold all the ingredients which were energized by touches of delectable deli mustard. In its entirety, the portion was so large, it could have easily served as an entree.
The menu offers several other gourmet toppings for the Killer Dog. Hand Cut Killer Fries, made in house from fresh potatoes are an ideal complement to your main course. Beverages such as the house’s Birch Beer as well as other soft drinks from the fountain, in cans (Dr. Brown) and bottles will enliven any main. A variety of domestic and imported beer plus wine by the glass are also available.
Although Killer Dogs are the star attraction, the kitchen shows its versatility in numerous other signature creations. Our order of crisp, succulent Killer Wings, for example, was outstanding. The large, fresh, never frozen segments were bathed with a fragrant mustard tinged sweet sauce and paired with vibrant celery stalks accompanied by tantalizing blue cheese.
You may be surprised (and delighted) to discover that Killer Dogs has several seafood offerings, ranging from the popular Killer Lobster Roll (served cold or warm) to the Whole Belly Clam Roll. Not listed on the menu, but posted in the kitchen, is the house’s version of Fish and Chips.
Of course no meal is complete without an uplifting dessert and in my opinion the most exciting option is the Classic Wicked Whoopie, a phenomenal treat overflowing with a sweet cream filling sandwiched between two chocolate cake shells. The Whoopies are served frozen and undoubtedly you will want to take a few home.
