By Roger Zona

Question:

Is there an easy way to clean tile grout lines?

Answer:

Sorry to have to tell you – cleaning grout is a thankless job but necessary to keep your floors and walls looking clean.

There are several options to use as a cleaner. Ordinary white vinegar or laundry bleach are readily available and any leftover can be used. Here is a list of things you will need regardless which cleanser you use.

Lets start with a vinegar solution.  Grout is a porous material that enables dirt and liquids to settle their way into pin  holes, which  in turn causes impossible stains that are difficult to remove. Plain  white vinegar  can be used to clean and disinfect.

However, the acidic level can cause damage to tile, so extreme caution must be used.

Fill the spray bottle with 2 parts water to 1 part white vinegar. Spray about a yard of grout line and let it sit for 5 or 10 minutes. While the cleanser is working, spray another yard of grout. Using a grout brush, scrub the grout first sprayed. Keep a pail of clean water handy for rinsing, using an old towel. Repeat this until you have cleaned all the grout.

The more traditional cleaner is laundry bleach. The brush is dipped in the bleach, and then the grout is thoroughly scrubbed.
