Benny’s Boynton Grill

By Arnold Leir
The Lobsters Are Fantastic and So Is Everything Else

Dining at Benny’s Boynton Grill is an experience that you will want to repeat, not only because of the incomparable quality of the offerings, but also because of the care and attention everyone receives. You get the feeling that proprietor Benny Townend attempts to provide the maximum amount of enjoyment with the minimum amount of fuss.

There is no pretense at this Boynton Beach restaurant. From the simple exterior to the immaculate interior, one senses that the owner prefers to keep a low profile. If you haven’t heard of him, that’s your misfortune because he chooses to focus on every aspect of his business rather than opening new outlets to create an exponentially growing chain or franchise. To be so consistently successful for twelve years requires an immense attention to detail and the effort shows in every bite.

The New England Clam Chowder ($3.50/$5), for example, comes up creamy and is infused with fresh clams and a fine selection of assorted vegetables. The Peel´n Eat Shrimp Cocktail ($10.95) is a half pound feast of plump, incredibly seasoned crustaceans, so deliciously appealing that everyone wished for a second round.

Each dish is structured with the ideal proportion of ingredients. The Gorgonzola Salad ($8.79) is a classic in the sense its ports delectable favorites such as black olives, roasted red peppers, cucumbers, lettuce and tomatoes in a well crafted combination that works perfectly with the fragrant cheese and dressing. Rather than classic, I would call it “extraordinary” because of its fabulous flavors and elegant plating.

I should point out that Benny’s has a magnificent bar that dispenses a variety of favorite beers (draft and bottled), signature drinks of endless colors and a cross section of fine wines. Enjoy two-for-one specials everyday at the bar during Happy Hour (3 to 6pm).

While savoring our Corbett Canyon Chardonnay, we couldn’t help noticing the endless flow of two pound lobsters (Mkt. price) being served at every table. A pair of grandparents had one each and treated a young grandson to his own gigantic beauty. Even the “Kinder” know Boynton’s best kept secret: Benny’s lobsters are the greatest.

The two-pounder is only one of many superb mains from this restaurant’s menu. Fresh Rainbow Trout Almandine ($14.95) delivers a satiny filet supporting clusters of crunchy, savory almonds. For beef aficionados, the perfectly grilled Filet Mignon ($22.95) is just one of the land specialties prepared with the greatest panache. Then, for only $8.49, there is Benny’s famous half pound Steak Burger (a mere $5.99 on Wednesdays) – hundreds are sold every week.

Quality and flavor continue through the very last morsel of the rich, slightly tart homemade Key Lime Pie ($3) and the totally scrumptious Chocolate Mousse ($3). This illustrates again how Benny’s Boynton Grill maximizes enjoyment at modest prices.
