Are Electric Vehicles Dangerous in Water?

By Teresa Aquila

I hear people asking: How well will my electric vehicle fare if there is a flood? The answer is not a simple one. Electric vehicles are not designed to be driven in areas that are susceptible to flooding. In the event you find you and your EV in a flood, there are many factors you should consider. First off, never drive to flooded areas. Electric vehicles and water do not mix. If flooding is possible, and your vehicle is parked outside, reduce your batteries capacity to 20% or 30%. Be familiar with your EV’s safety features and emergency procedures, including how to exit the vehicle safely if it’s submerged. If you have an e-bike, you should remove the battery and store in a safe dry place.

If your EV has been exposed to water, have it inspected to ensure that there is no damage. If electric vehicles are submerged for long periods of time, this can cause thermal runaway. When electric vehicle batteries temperature changes rapidly, the cells heat up, and this causes more current to flow. Thermal runaway can cause a battery to violently vent gas, shrapnel and particulates, and can lead to extremely high temperatures, smoke and fire.

If you own, or are planning to own an electric vehicle, know the risks involved, and follow all precautions stated in your owner’s manual.

Never wait until it happens. Happy Motoring.
