We all have come to love technology and what it offers in many ways – from self-driving vehicles to smart homes and monitoring our health. This helps make our lives easier. What about the negative side? Thieves have embraced technology to enhance how they steal from wealthier homeowners. In Oakland County, Michigan, criminals are utilizing tracking devices to monitor individuals’ behavior, and trail cams to know when homeowners are out of town. The would-be thieves even have jamming devices that will interrupt your home’s Wi-Fi to prevent security devices from notifying the car or homeowner of the intruder. This prevents alarms from going off, and notifying neighbors as well as authorities. They usually approach through a wooded area, and enter the residence through a window or door.
After stealing valuables, to include vehicles, they’re frequently shipped to large port cities where a fencer moves them out of the country. The thieves enter the country illegally or through the Visa Waiver Program. Several thieves have been captured and arrested, but they believe more are on their way. Put your home on a police watch with your local law enforcement agency when out of town. Have a neighbor monitor your cars/home daily, and even use trail cams for the same reason the thieves do. We live in a high-tech world with many flaws. Stay safe! Happy Motoring.
