Tolls In and Out of Virginia City in the 1800s

By Teresa Aquila
In our modern times with vehicles filled with electronic safety devices and electric vehicles, paying your fair share of the road via taxes is nothing new. As we travel in various states, paying your passage on roads and bridges can get costly. There are three types of tolling systems in the United States: the barrier or open toll system, ticket or closed toll system, and distance-based system. Rates vary depending on the state and type of system you are traveling on.

Back in the 1800s when the town of Virginia City, Nevada was a thriving mining town, to get in or out of Virginia City you had to pay your way. To walk into Virginia City, it cost you five cents, a horse and rider was 15 cents, a buggy/wagon was 25 cents, and a freight wagon, bringing goods or leaving with ore cost $40. That would be $240 in today’s value.

Happy Motoring.
