DAVID HALL’S Clothes Closet Makeover in 10 easy steps
1. USE the S.M.A.R.T system I introduced in last month’s column, and visit APlusClutterClearing.com for a refresher.
2. With good music, liquid libation, comfy clothes, and a mindset for action, let’s begin.
3. You know all those clothes hanging up? lying down? Or all around the closet floor?
TAKE THEM OUT of the CLOSET and pile them as high as you can ON YOUR BED.
4. You’ll quickly discern clothes you’ve not seen in a long while: Too big, too small, too frumpy, too short, too long – just not you – anymore.
5. Grab several trash bags, we’re about to declutter into categories: KEEP, TOSS, DONATE.
6. By donating, you’re repurposing your stuff, making life a little bit easier on the receiving end. You’ll also receive a charitable donation tax deduction! You’ll toss old shoes, orphan socks, ripped jeans (the bad rips, not the stylin’ ones) and you’ll decide to keep what you love and what brings you pleasure, and clothes you may wear again!!!
7. Be honest with yourself – if you’ve grown bigger, get rid of those really tiny tops and bottoms that no longer fit. They likely make you feel miserable, reminding you of your current shape (it’s a COVID THING!). As you purge, you’ll feel refreshed, invigorated, and downright happy to release the hold of your unwanted clothes.
8. Helpful hints: You may want the same style hanger. It makes your wardrobe look cleaner and simplifies what goes with what … homogenizing the look.
9. Sort any way you like (they’re YOUR clothes!) – some clients go with colors from white to black and everything in between. Others go with seasons, and some go with tops, bottoms, jackets and jeans. This comes into the organizing portion of the project – first you’ve got to get the clutter cleared before you organize.
10. Purses, belts, hats, wigs, jewelry … declutter and discard (donate) and begin again to enjoy all that you’ve acquired. By the time you have finished, you’ll soon be shopping again for things you love, things you “need,” and things you “want.”
By being purposeful, deliberate and decisive, you’ll feel better, look better and perform better in everyday life. Get started – it’s a better alternative than climbing over piles of old boots and bags!
