“I do believe in an everyday sort of magic – the inexplicable connectedness we sometimes experience with places, people, works of art and the like; the eerie appropriateness of moments of synchronicity; the whispered voice, the hidden presence, when we think we´re alone.”
- Charles de Lint, Author, The Mystery of Grace

* * * A student at a recent class of mine in Newburgh, New York suggested that I offer a class on Synchronicity. I thought about it for a week or so, and one day in meditation, it dawned on me that she was right. So I launched a workshop called “Synchronicity: How to be in the Right Place at the Right Time.” This retired woman wanted tips – sublime secrets – on how to maximize her chances of being the recipient of synchronicity.
As I did some research on the subject in preparation for the first presentation of the workshop, it dawned on my consciousness that synchronicity was a kind of place to live in, a sort of state of consciousness in which one could dwell. So I dubbed this place Synchroni City, the capital of the state of grace.
The great Swiss Depth Psychologist C.G. Jung wrote a book about the topic called Synchronicity: An Acausal Connecting Principle, published in 1960. In it, he talked about a patient who dreamed of a golden scarab, and the next day in her treatment such a beetle banged up against the window of Jung’s office, even though they were most rare for that climate. While there was clearly no causal connection between the scarab – a popular amulet and impression seal in ancient Egypt – in a dream and one by Jung’s window, it served as a catalyst for the patient’s psychological death and rebirth.
While synchronicity showed up in this psychiatric session, it often plays a role in more esoteric fields, such as parapsychology, astrology, and in the ancient Chinese oracle, the I Ching. The experience of it seems inextricably linked to being in a state of grace. So what then is grace? The dictionary defines it as “unmerited divine assistance given humans for their regeneration (spiritual renewal) or sanctification.” The key to enjoying more gifts of synchronicity, therefore, resides in the prerequisite of being in a state of grace. And how do you do that?
To experience more grace, you need to be more and more in tune with the flow of the Universe. That means to be swimming with the stream of Nature, rather than against it. Complaining about what happens in your life, fighting your “creations” will definitely keep you out of such a flow. Being at peace with what takes place in your life and around you enables you to glide more through life and avoid banging your head against the wall of the Universe.
There are a number of ways that you can flow with the Universe and be more in tune with Nature’s laws. The most effective way is to become more familiar with the level of Reality from where those laws are structured. This home of all the laws of Nature is situated at the transcendental level of Being, outside the changing field of time in Eternity, deep within you at the nonchanging place where your individuality merges with your universal nature. The best ways I know of to effortlessly connect to your higher Self are through two meditation techniques that I’ve taught:
Transcendental Meditation, which I taught for three decades, and Higher Self Healing Meditation, which I launched in 2010.
Another powerful way is to perform spiritual ceremonies that honor the invisible forces of Nature. In India, they call these yagyas to the gods; in North America, the natives who inhabited our continent before the white man arrived performed a variety of ceremonies to invite rain for their crops, support for their battles, and so forth. There are Brahmin pundits in India who conduct such yagyas today.
Something else you could do is align your mind to a much more positive way of thinking and empowered sense of being. You can do this through an enlightened three-step, holistic use of affirmations that I teach. You can also train yourself to speak harmoniously, avoid negative speech about yourself and others, and give up gossiping. In the realm of behavior, you can do what you know to be right and avoid doing things that you know to be wrong.
These changes in your actions, speech, thoughts, ceremonies, and Being all invite extremely positive responses from the Universe. In other words, they bring good karma. The growth of good karma in your life and the concomitant decrease of bad karma put you in a more receptive place, and the opportunity to be granted a state of grace. Once there, you have a chance to enjoy the capital city of the state of Grace – Synchroni City.
