How to be an A Patient

At some point in our life, we all have to visit a doctor for health care maintenance or intervention. But, as a patient, you should make sure that you are receiving the best care possible and that you, as a patient, are giving 100% to your own health. After all, it is your body, you have to make sure it is treated well.

 

To become a more A patient, it is important to know that your appointed health care professional can help you with your particular concerns. Research the business licenses, insurance, specialties, cost, and customer service ratings. This is to avoid the feeling of time wasted or getting the run around regarding your health condition.

Make sure you inform your health care professional about all health conditions or symptoms, even if you think they are not related. 80% of a patient’s history is told to the doctor, but if some information is left out, a diagnosis may not be properly assigned due to missing information.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. If there is a prescription you are not aware of, ask your physician about the side effects, or how it will conflict with previous medication or vitamins you are taking. Also, do you own research regarding your health condition and prescriptions that were prescribed. Health care professionals are experts in their particular craft; however, as a patient living with the ailment, you should know as much information as possible to be assured you are receiving the best care.

Don’t be afraid to get a second or third opinion if you feel it is necessary getting. Different opinions are not in the effort of seeking what you want to hear, but rather to see if your diagnosis and treatment are accurate and if there are alternatives to treating conditions.

Be proactive with changing life style habits that will help to decrease or eliminate you condition. Whether it be to lose weight, exercise, take your prescription, or attend annual appointments, doing everything in your power to improve your health is ideal.

If you enjoy the service that is being received from your health care professional, feel free to tell family, coworkers, and friends. This is the best way to thank them for the services they provided.

Remember, at the end of the day or once you leave that doctor’s office, your body is yours. It’s the only one you get, so take care of it well.
