Vehicle Safety

By Teresa Aquila
Everytime I watch the news, it seems cars across the country are being broke into and items in plain sight seem to be the target. In my home town I teach people about safety and what to do to keep your valuables safe and your shopping experience enjoyable. During the Holiday seasons and not just Christmas, people shop and then leave their purchases in plain view inside their vehicles. This to a criminal is like temptation. So let me offer some advice.

Lock your vehicle and hide all valuables, preferably in the trunk or locked compartment. Before sunrise and after sunset, carry keys in your hand. park and walk in well-lit areas and Look inside and under your car before entering your vehicle.

Stay alert to your surroundings and take a moment to glance around for possible suspicious persons, vehicles, and/or situations.

If you like to warm your vehicle prior to heading to work, do not leave it unattended. It only takes a few seconds to jump in and be off. You might consider installing the auto start systems on the market today. It is remote and easy to use. If someone does attempt to drive away, once the pedal is depressed, the engine stalls and will not restart until you do it manually.

Use your panic button if you feel unsafe to draw attention. If your car breaks down, stay with the vehicle if at all possible and call the local law enforcement for assistance.

If you have to leave the vehicle, place a note in the vehicle stating your direction of travel and a phone number to reach you and make sure your vehicle is locked. Call a family member or friend and let them know of your situation.

If you are planning to travel, have your vehicle checked over prior to departure. Preplanning and Preventative maintenance does pay off in the long run.

Don’t leave your phone or elec- tronic cords in plain view and plugged in when you park your car.

It indicates electronics on board.

Criminals are doing smash and grabs, so try not to become a victim.

With some simple practices you could save yourself heartache and personal safety.
