Summertime Safety

By David Shiner
To many, the summer months are a time for family vacations, visiting friends, and a whole array of outdoor activities. As South Floridians embrace the fanfare associated with summer, there are several safety hazards unique to summer that emerge just as quickly as the summer heat. As a result of the better weather, construction/repair projects increase, as well as visits to the pool. Around your local community, you will likely find newly dug holes, uneven surfaces, cracked pavement, and wet surfaces. These hazards are the source of slip/trip and fall injuries, or premises liability as it is often called in the legal field.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), over one million Americans suffer a slip, trip, and fall injury and over 17, 000 people die in the U.S. annually because of these injuries.

According to the National Safety Council, slips, trips, and falls are one of the leading causes of unintentional injuries in the United States, accounting for approximately 8.9 million visits to the emergency room. As such, slip/trip and fall injuries can be devastating not only your life, but these injuries could also affect your loved ones. Despite this rather daunting information, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Armed with this information, you can learn to recognize all of these hazards in your community, and try to avoid them. With that said, if you or a loved one is injured in a slip and fall accident, it is important to seek medical attention as soon as possible. Although slip/trip and fall accidents may seem minor at first, there are several serious complications that may arise from these accidents, such as: broken bones, head trauma, spinal cord injuries, and long term medical complications. Furthermore, these injuries could result in thousands of dollars in medical bills. Therefore, it is important for you to contact a personal injury attorney to fight for your rights and get you compensation for the injuries suffered caused by another’s negligence.

Another event that is popularly associated with summer time are BBQ’s. This is an event where friends and family of all ages can get together to enjoy good company and good food. Thus, in addition to protecting yourself, you also have a duty to protect guests from hazards on your property. If someone is injured on your property, you may be held responsible for their injuries. Nevertheless, the are several things you can do to make your property safer, such as: inspecting your property for potential out door hazards, making necessary repairs, and warning of known hazards.

Lastly, don’t let the above information put a damper on your summer plans. Let it serve as a reminder that these hazards are out there, and with proper caution, they can be avoided. In the unfortunate situation where you or a loved one is injured, be sure to get appropriate medical attention, and consult a personal injury attorney.
